🦅 The 1973
American Eagle Jumpsuit: Aloha from Hawaii
When Elvis Presley took the stage on January 14, 1973, for his legendary “Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” concert, he wasn’t just making entertainment history—he was presenting himself as a living symbol of American glory. Beamed live across the globe, it became the first concert ever broadcast via satellite, viewed by over 1.5 billion people.
And for that momentous night, Elvis wore what would become one of his most legendary costumes: the 1973 American Eagle Jumpsuit — also known by fans and collectors as the Aloha Eagle Suit or simply, the Aloha Suit.

🧵
Designed by Bill Belew:
A Patriotic Masterpiece
Elvis’s longtime costume designer,
Bill Belew, designed the
American Eagle Jumpsuit specifically for the Aloha concert. Belew understood that this would be a global event, and he wanted to dress
Elvis not just as a rock star, but as a symbol of America itself.
• The suit was crafted from white gabardine, a sharp, stage-ready fabric.
• It featured an elaborate embroidered eagle in full flight, its wings spread wide across the chest and back — hand-stitched with gold thread, red and blue rhinestones, and sparkling accents to catch the stage lights.
• The pants flared dramatically, and the suit was matched with a floor-length white cape bearing a massive eagle across the back.

A Tale of Two Suits and Three Belts
Interestingly,
two nearly identical versions of the
American Eagle jumpsuit were produced:
• The first version, slightly larger, was worn during the rehearsal show and later appeared during Elvis’s 1973–1974 tour dates, including performances in Las Vegas.
• The second, more tailored version was worn during the main Aloha broadcast itself.
Belts Made for American Eagle Jumpsuit
1. First Belt – Never worn on stage. Elvis gifted it to actor Jack Lord (of Hawaii Five-O fame) before ever using it in concert.
2. Second Belt – Identical to the first, it was worn by Elvis during both the rehearsal and main Aloha shows.
3. Third Belt – Slightly different in design, this became the default belt Elvis used every time he wore the suit after the Aloha concert. He also paired it with the “1974 American Eagle” jumpsuit during his May 1974 tour and shows in Lake Tahoe.

Where Are They Now?
The legacy of this outfit has taken on a life of its own in the collector’s world:
• Graceland/EPE currently holds both original suits, one of the capes, and the third belt.
• A private collector (LM) owns another cape and one of the original two belts.
• Ed Parker, Elvis’s karate instructor and friend, is believed to possess one of the capes and a belt.
• The original, oversized cape — the one too heavy for performance — was later sold at an EPE auction and now resides in private hands.

A Look That Soared with the Music
The
American Eagle jumpsuit wasn’t just a piece of stagewear — it was a cultural statement. From
the soaring eagle across his chest to the shimmering
cape thrown dramatically to the stage floor,
Elvis used fashion to magnify his message: This was America. This was music. And this was The King.
To this day, the suit is revered as the crown jewel of
Elvis Presley’s onstage wardrobe — a dazzling blend of patriotism, pageantry, and Presley power.
